Purpose:
While reading the book in small groups, have students note the different
characters introduced, the different settings, and define vocabulary words
they do not know.
Objectives:
§Students will write down words they do not know while they are reading.
§Students will note when a new character is introduced.
§Students will be able to give examples of general and specific settings in the book.
§Students will be able to tell a few defining characteristics and changes in the main characters.
§Students will discuss the events and vocabulary in small groups.
SOL’s:
§Language Arts 4.1- The student will contribute to small group discussions.
§Language Arts 4.3- The student will read and learn the meanings of unfamiliar words.
§Language Arts 4.4- Note character changes and compare settings, characters, and plots in literary selections.
Materials: Novel Superfudge by Judy Blume
Students need writing journals or a place to write notes
Narrative: Have the kids take turns reading from the book outloud.Write down any new characters and a few sentences about each character.Discuss setting, when appropriate.Give examples of general and specific settings in their life and then have them pick out general and specific settings in the book.As they read, have students write down unfamiliar words and then define them.
Evaluation: Students will be given a quiz mid-way through the book.Students will have to do a project upon completion of the novel unit.
Closure: Talk about the changes in characters and different settings.
Follow-Up: Read another book in the Fudge series.Also, introduce new concepts such as plot.
