Baking Soda and Vinegar Lab

**I know you all have done this before, but we will be doing this and having a discussion about it that will help with the next information we will go over.  So please take this lab seriously.

Get in groups of 2 to do this lab.

  1. Put 5 mL of vinegar in the ‘snack bag’ (the small plastic bag), and zip it up
  2. Weigh out 5 g of baking soda
  3. Put the baking soda in the ‘normal plastic bag’
  4. Place the snack bag with the vinegar into the large bag with the baking soda
  5. Zip the normal plastic bag up
  6. Record the mass of both bags together
  7. With both bags zipped up, unzip the snack bag **keeping it inside the zipped normal bag
  8. Mix the vinegar and the baking soda together.
  9. Carfully record any observations from the reaction.  *Be very descriptive
  10. Once the reaction is complete record the mass of the reaction and both bags again
  11. Be prepared to talk about your observations and findings!

1.                  What do you think will happen when you mix baking soda and vinegar together?

2.                  Do you think this is a chemical or physical change?

3.                  What is the evidence that you think you will find?

Mass (g)

Mass of Both bags, vinegar and Baking soda, BEFORE the reaction

Mass of Both bags, and the substances, AFTER the reaction

1.                  Did the mass of the reaction containers and contents change before and after the reaction?    Give a possible reason why.

2.                  What were the evidence that you observed during the lab that this may be a chemical or physical reaction?

3.                  After observing the evidence do you believe that the reaction you performed was a chemical or a physical change?

Miss Despain will give the reaction that you performed on the board, please copy it down in this blank so you will have it for your notes.
