Team Epic Journey : Adventures in West Virginia

Sled dogs in the Wild and Wonderful State?

WEST VIRGINIA!
The best snow for dog sledding is 3 hours away in West Virginia. They get between 90 and 180 inches of snow each year. The scienic highway is a few miles north of Marlinton, WV. They get some of the highest snowfall in the area. While WV is usually considered the Mid-Atlantic, it has the best snow below the Mason-Dixon line.

Scienic Highway 150

Snow comes early in West Virginia this year!

12-22-inches of snow fell this week in the high mountains of west virginia. We canceled our plans and headed out on Saturday. Here we are mid-day, temperatures around 28 F and some good snow. We completed two runs, an eight mile run with ten dogs and a four mile run with eight dogs. Our eight mile run ended in the dark, using headlamps, with temperatures dropping to 11 F - no pictures since it was dark and cold. I had modified our tobagan sled so that it had a greater curve on the runners, better for going over downed trees, so this was a good practice run for our upcomming winter camping trip.

Here are some shots from our trip on 1/27/07 Some GOOD southern snow!

Below are some good shots of last year.

We took two teams out on Monday December 19/06. Temperatures were in the teens! We traveled on Scienic Hwy 150 just outside Marlington, WV.

Snow Shoe Ski Resort

We've even run at the famous Snow Shoe ski resort on their cross country trails. We were invited up to check them out in 2005. Love to be invited back.
