Who am I?
|
I am a Snowshoe Hare. This hare was traveling upwards in the picture. The two large tracks are the hind feet. Because the snow is so shallow the toes do not spread at all, making a very narrow hind track. The front paws came down with the left and then the right. This is the typical hare track pattern. To determine if it’s a snowshoe hare check for the very large feet hind feet and if your in the proper habitat. It is always helpful to check your range maps to see which hares occur in the area. One last thing we can tell from this track is that the animal had recently moved through the area. Firstly, because the tracks are very crisp. The edges have not been worn down by wind or temperature change. Also, by knowing that it snowed that morning, we can deduce that the tracks are only a few hours old. |

You can see from this picture that the hare was traveling upwards in the picture. We can tell that this hare was not foraging but moving quickly through this area in a straight line. |
