FORMATTING GUIDELINES
FOR PAPERS in Prof. Hausman's classes:
Fonts and
spacing:
- Always double
space your papers.
- Use a readable,
12-point, nonproportionally spaced font, like Courier 12. Avoid all fonts
that look like handwriting or fancy script; also avoid fonts that print hard-to-read
letters. Usually a twelve point font is the right size. When in doubt, use
Verdana or Courier (this document is Verdana).
- Your paper should
have about 250 words per page. This is what my page ranges expect.
- Your margins
should be 1 inch on each side and the top and bottom.
Printer
Issues:
- Make sure your
printer prints legibly. Smudges are unsightly and can make the print
unreadable. If you need to change the cartridge or toner to print darkly enough,
please do so.
- Make sure your
printer works a few hours before the paper is due.That way, if there's
a problem, you can take the paper to the library to print it out.
Putting
the paper together:
- Please staple
your pages together. Paper clips come off, drop on floors, and get picked
up by curious children, who sometimes swallow them. Pages that come undone
from paper clips can be lost.
- Do not use a
title page. Instead, put your name, the assignment of the paper (such
as Essay #3), and the date in the upper right hand corner of the paper. The
title of your paper may be centered above the start of the text.
- Please number
your pages in arabic numerals. You may place the numbers at the bottom of
the pages or at the upper right hand corner.
Documenting
sources:
- Use MLA
Style when writing papers. MLA Style uses in-text citations and a
list of Works Cited at the end of your paper. To accurately cite papers with
MLA Style, you should own a copy of The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research
Papers (6th edition).
- Always
provide a list of Works Cited at the end of your paper. Do not make this list
a separate Word file, as you are more likely to forget to print it out this
way.
- Always
providing a list of Works Cited at the end of a paper means that you need
to provide such a list even if you are writing about a text read for class.
If you are citing a handout that does not provide all the publication information
necessary, provide as much as you can and indicate that it is a handout.
