How to Enroll
To enroll in the Medicine and Society (MSOC) minor, you must see Professor Bernice Hausman to fill out the forms and get information about the required and elective courses. The best thing to do is to just show up at her office hours. Budget about 10-15 minutes for this initial meeting, although since there may be other students, you might have to wait a few minutes in the hall. (Her email is bhausman @ vt.edu, if you need to make an appointment for another time.)
At this meeting you will discuss your course of study and she will give you information about signing up for specific required classes, when classes meet (fall or spring) and whether there are any MSOC speakers coming up that you might be interested in. You will get a copy of the current checksheet, although it is always good to do your homework ahead of time and come with one in hand.
You will also fill out an "add minor" form, which both you and Professor Hausman will sign and which she will send to the Department of Science and Technology in Society to put through the system. Professor Hausman will be listed as your secondary advisor, and she will be able to check your DARS when you are nearing graduation to ensure that the MSOC minor requirements are taken care of. She will also put you on an official MSOC email list for announcements.
Information about courses in the minor is available in Honors (Hillcrest Hall) and at Professor Hausman's office (206 Shanks Hall). You do not need to contact Professor Hausman every semester, unless you are having difficulty meeting the checksheet requirements or need a substitution due to a scheduling conflict. If you are making adequate progress through the minor's requirements, then you need not check in each semester. If you do want some feedback, the best way to contact Professor Hausman is by email. She is always prompt in her replies. She also answers the phone during her office hours.
