About me

I am an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Virginia Tech. My principal interest is in the contents and character of the natural world. Mostly this amounts to a concern with the interpretation of scientific theory and the question of what if anything scientific theory licenses us to say about unobservable entities, processes, and events. To this end, I have worked on topics like the viability of particle interpretations of quantum theory, the plausibiltiy of ontic structural realism, indeterminism in evolution, and biological codes.

My current research is focused on the identification of individuals in various scientific domains. I am working on a domain-general method for picking out the individuals sanctioned by a body of scientific theory and on some of the specific, concrete ontologies that arise from problematic areas of biological theory.
