As the Internet reaches broader and broader markets, the ability to restrict access and availability becomes more of a problem.  Different states within the United States alone have different laws regarding Internet use.  Although these state laws con be ultimately governed by federal law, the United States government has no jurisdiction over laws in other countries.  The United States can block many of these sites created overseas which promote illegal activity in the US, however, this would only create uncontrollable controversy concerning the rights and freedoms of citizens.

Many other countries without democratic governments are maintaining the technological advances that the Internet brings, however are monitoring access closely so as not to lose years of government control.  For example, China implements the same firewall and filtering technology used to protect corporate networks to limit and strictly control overseas sites.  Saudi Arabia and Singapore both filter and strictly monitor all Internet content that is allowed in the country.  South Korea has banned all sites promoting, advocating, or allowing gambling of any sort.  Children in Iran are prohibited from using the Internet altogether.  Numerous cases are pending in Australia concerning the rights  and freedoms of its citizens and Internet control.

Internet censorship in the United States would undoubtedly protect children from harmful or unsuitable material.  At the same time it would strip adults of the freedoms promised in the Constitution.  Internet censorship would also help regulate the content of the Internet and reduce the ability to hide 'dirty money' in foreign financial institutions.  However, US jurisdiction does not reach overseas and these sites would still be available.

The only solution that Internet users currently have are the use of filters.  Although even these are not 100% guaranteed to block every harmful site from a computer, it is the only resolution available.
