The Importance of Lesson Plans

Below are listed the unit plans that I implemented during my student teaching experience.  All of the lessons were created with the Virginia SOL's and the National Council for the Social Studies themes in mind.  Both the SOL's and NCSS themes were used to help create an outline for the units.  By clicking on the unit plan, you will be able to view the unit, lesson by lesson.

The Importance of Lesson Plans

I feel that I should start out this section on lesson plans by explaining why I feel lesson plans are important.  A large part of classroom management is being prepared and keeping student's working.  Planning lessons prior to them being taught is very important in classroom management.  A teacher cannot be effective if they improvise every lesson.

Planning lessons prior to their implementation has helped me out greatly during my student teaching experience.  Some cooperating teachers required their student teachers to turn in their lesson plans, mine did not.  However, I still made sure to prepare lesson prior to their implementation.  It is a very uncomfortable to just improvise in front of the class.  I am the type of person who needs to have a plan, this is where lesson plans come in.  During my student teaching experience, I have learned that it is best to over plan a lesson than under plan.

Being prepared for each and every day is a task that teachers must embrace.  Although we are not payed for the hours worked outside of the school day, it is one of the most important parts of the educational system.  Planning keeps the educational wheels greased.  If a teacher does not want to spend time outside of the classroom working on lesson plans, maybe they should look for another form of employment.  If a teachers students are failing, that teacher should reflect upon themselves to see how much time they spend planning each lesson.  Many of the problems faced in the classroom can simply be avoided through planning lessons.
