Theme 2: Time Continuity, and Change
The very first lesson that I presented during my student teaching experience fell into the category of Time, Continuity, and Change. The lesson dealt with the causes of World War II. Time is a very important part of history; however, it is not the most important part. Actual events make up history and time just places them in order. The class was looking at the events that led up to World War II.
It is important to understand that World War II did not just occur because of one isolated event. World War II had many causes and sometimes teachers forget this. Time, continuity, and change are very important for students to understand, especially when dealing with social studies. We as social study educators must explain and help students analyze such things as time, chronology, causality, and change.
I will try to teach time, continuity, and change in my
future classroom. It is very important for students to understand
cause and effect in the studying of the social studies. It is hard
to explain exactly how I will carry this out because I do not know the
subject area in which I will be teaching next year. However, I can
say without a doubt that I will keep time, continuity, and change on my
mind when planning lessons.
