Expository
Introduction to basic
principles of the composing process, rhetoric and standard usage.
Development of writing
skills and processes begun in ENGL 101 and introduction to such research skills
as summarizing, paraphrasing, footnoting, note-taking and using library
resources.
ENGL 201 Masterpieces of
World Literature
Survey of literature that
has most influenced thought and writing of Western culture.
ENGL 203 Masterpieces of
American Literature
American writing from
colonial period to present; examines writers who have made greatest
contributions to American and world culture.
ENGL 301 Advanced
Composition
Expository writing with emphasis
on complex rhetorical strategies. Students evaluate writing of other students
and professionals.
ENGL 306 Preparation of
Professional Papers
Course trains students to
organize and communicate detailed, factual subject matter of their own academic
disciplines. Several short reports and long research report required.
ENGL 307 Business Writing
The course prepares students
to cope with the strategy and writing of a wide range of informative and
persuasive business letters and reports. Typewritten weekly assignments and
short reports are required.
ENGL 309 Fiction Writing
For student who plans to
teach creative writing at secondary level and needs introduction to fiction
writing methods; for student who, regardless of background and vocational
plans, is interested in developing fiction writing potential or improving
writing skills; or for student of literature interested in writing fiction and
sharpening critical appreciation.
ENGL 310 Poetry Writing
For student who plans to
teach creative writing at secondary level and needs introduction to poetry
writing methods; for student who, regardless of background
and vocational plans, is
interested in developing poetry writing potential; or for student of literature
interested in writing poetry and sharpening critical appreciation.
ENGL 314 Topics in
Literature (Southern Literature in Film)
Investigation of a literary
topic of current or continuing interest not normally covered in regularly
scheduled courses. Topic announced with each offering of course.
ENGL 321 The Study of
Fiction
A study of the novel and
short story as literary forms with their own specific types and theoretical
traditions.
ENGL 322 The Study of Poetry
A study of poetry as a
literary genre with its own specific types and critical theories, illustrated
by representative readings from various periods and
traditions.
ENGL 323 The Study of Drama
A study of drama as a
literary genre, with its own specific types and critical theories, illustrated
by representative readings from various periods and traditions.
ENGL 402 Teaching Writing:
Theories and Practices
The course teaches students
the latest theories and practices governing the teaching of written
composition. Students write expository essays, work in writing
support groups, develop writing
assignments, study the writing process and learn to respond to and evaluate
student writing.
ENGL 403 Grammar and Style
for Writers
Analysis and practice of
various prose styles to prepare students for creative and business writing
courses; study of grammatical concepts relevant to effective writing.
ENGL 420 Introduction to
Literary Criticism
Survey of major texts of
literary criticism from classical period to present; includes analysis of major
problems of literary criticism and introduces dominant modes of critical
thought today.
ENGL 425 The Study of
Adolescent Literature
Course familiarizes students
with classical and contemporary literature whose audience is primarily
adolescents. Students are led to understand why teenage readers make the literature
choices they do. The course helps students develop a positive attitude toward
this kind of literature and understand why this kind of literature should have
a place in the reading program of adolescents.
ENGL 443 The American
Renaissance
In depth study of several
major 19th century American writers and general intellectual climate of the
period.
ENGL 445 Modern American
Literature
Critical study of major
poets and novelists between 1900 and World War II with consideration of how
their works relate to intellectual currents of the period.

American Drama
Study of the contributions
of various playwrights to the development of American drama. Examines types of
drama popular during several periods of American history; concentrates on 20th
century.
ENGL 452 Trends in Modern
Drama
Study of representative
works of important modern dramatists from Ibsen to the present.
ENGL 463 Grammar and
Language for Teachers
Primarily intended for
prospective teachers of English language arts, this course offers an intensive
study of English grammar illuminated by the history and development of the
language, by language acquisition theory (psycholinguistics) and by social
dimensions of language (sociolinguistics).

English Language
History and development of
English language from its origins to present.
ENGL 472 Readings in
Shakespeare
Critical study of
representative works of Shakespeare.
ENGL 496 Senior Seminar
The objective of this course
is twofold: (1) to invite students of language, writing, and literature to
participate in the theoretical debates surrounding the study of English; (2) to
afford each student the opportunity to pursue a semester-long research project
culminating in a senior essay which focuses on an interest the student has
developed during prior course work.
