BY HAMMER & HAND: CONTEMPORARY REPOUSSE´

Repoussé is a technique in which a two-dimensional sheet of metal is hammered repeatedly into a three-dimensional form. Different metals can be used including gold, copper, silver and iron. A smith begins with a flat sheet or template held against a stake or pitch and uses small, consistent hammer blows to create relief. It was more common in ancient times and examples exist from diverse cultures from the Egyptians to the European middle ages. Because repoussé is such a time-consuming technique, it is rarely used among contemporary metalsmiths. Only a handful of artists use this technique in the US today. This exhibition will attempt to define extent of such work in the US as well as provide historical background, technical information, and educational materials.
