About the New River Valley:

The New River Valley is located in southwest Virginiaand includes the counties that border the New River: Montgomery, Floyd, Pulaski, and Giles as well as the city of Radford.

The earliest documented European exploration of the New River and its valley was a 1671 expedition sponsored by Abraham Wood.

The river collects its headwaters from the streams and creeks in the high Blue Ridge elevations of Ashe and Alleghaney Counties, NC.

The New River is considered by geologists to be one of the oldest rivers in the world and flows north west to the Ohio River.

Compared to other districts in the area the New River Valley holds the longest mile span of the Appalachian Trail.
