The Native American
Program

A YMCA Student Program

Background Information

The Native American Program began in the Spring of 1993. It initially developed from an interest in planning a Spring Break trip to an Indian reservation. However, it grew into an overall program that focuses on Native American culture and their way of life.

The program is organized by several student leaders called the Steering Committee. These individuals plan and make preparations for the scheduled events. Any individual that is interested in helping to plan these events is encouraged to do so. By getting involved with the Steering Committee one will have more diverse opportunities for growth in his/her knowledge and an opportunity to expand their leadership skills.

The group of individuals that participate in this program is very diverse. There are students of all backgrounds and ages, community members, Virginia Tech faculty and staff, Indians and non-Indians. Anyone interested in this subject matter is welcome to join us.

The program's mission is to develop awareness, understanding , and appreciation of the Native American culture and issues currently facing Native American communities. This is accomplished through various programs such as craft workshops, guest speakers, the viewing of films, and off-campus trips. Alternative Spring Break trips are also scheduled each year to allow participants to experience first-hand what life in a Native American Community is like, to learn from the native peoples living in these communities, and as an opportunity to provide community service to native peoples.
