NSTA Components Evidence
3a. The candidate plans and develops science curriculum addressing the needs of students with differing social or cultural backgrounds or learning styles.
  • Diverse teaching strategies - Throughout my teaching, I utilized a variety of teaching strategies so as to meet the needs of different learning styles. This included: (1) large cooperative groups, (2) partner cooperative groups, (3) individualized activities, (4) online activities, (5) hands-on activities, (6) role-playing activities (indoors and outdoors), (6) and teacher-directed lectures using PowerPoint (hard copy and online version of notes outline made available to all students), just to name a few.
  • Prior Knowledge Investigation - This lesson was taught in a middle school science classroom that included a high percentage of minority students, thus the lesson was tailored to their age level and cultural background. I included Lil' Bow Wow's hereditary traits and discussed sickle cell anemia at length, versus including an older, white famous figure and discussing a disease like Tay- Sach's (low frequency in black populations).
  • Reflection: Adolescent Learners and Diversity - This reflection discusses some strategies that can be used to meet the needs of diverse learners, including ELL students, students with an IEP/504, as well as those regular education students that benefit from oral, written, and/or hands-on teaching strategies.
