Plants Unit Plan
This is a unit plan I prepared for 10th grade Biology. This unit plan focuses on the characteristics and diversity of plants. One lesson allows the students to research the immense vocabulary that is associated with plants. The Plant Vocabulary Lesson focuses on increasing students vocabulary and knowledge of plants.
Students elaborated on the different tasks that various flower and plant parts have in the Help Wanted Lesson Plan. In groups, students develop a classified job advertisement for various parts of the plant. The advertisement is written so that the part of the plant is not stated outright, but characteristics are given for the tasks the plant part performs. Students also see the features of plants by participating in the Photosynthesis Poem Lesson Plan. Students fill in parts of the a poem about photosynthesis and labels parts of a leaf cross-section, flower and the characteristics of monocots and dicots.
The students also worked in groups during the Seed Germination Experimentation Lesson Plan. Students designed their own experiment to test the factors of seed germination, included variables and were required to write a lab report at the conclusion of the experiment. Students used the activity sheet to guide their experiment.
Another lesson uses alliteration to reinforce the knowledge of plant responses. Plant Tongue Twisters focuses on certain plant responses to the environment and defining those responses by creating a tongue twister that also helps the student remember the responses. Students used the Tongue Twister activity sheet to write their tongue twisters.
