The First Brushstrokes
(INTASC 1 - Science Content)
The first steps on the long road of becoming a skilled educator is a lot like the first steps of what will be a beautiful painting. No matter what, you have to start with a blank canvas. I began the first brushstroke of my education painting at Virginia Tech in the field of Biology. However, I changed direction and entered the field of Animal Science. This move allowed me to combine my love of science with my love of animals. I was able to complete much coursework to gain a great scientific background while in the Animal Science major. I was also able to gain much experience in both laboratory and field work. During my time as an Animal Science major, I expanded upon my intrigue in science with several different research projects including: Thawing Optimums for Bovine Spermatozoa, a group project completed in my Physiology of Reproduction class, as well as a project completed for Pathogenic Bacteriology on Determining Unknown Bacteria. The first brushstrokes had been laid upon the blank canvas of my teaching career.
