Cisco covered bridge
Covered bridge at Cisco, West Virginia, date unknown

Hughes River: A tributary of the Little Kanawha River in West Virginia. Formed by the confluence of its north and south forks near the community of Cisco (Ritchie County), the Hughes flows westward for 18 miles to its junction with the Little Kanawha near the community of Newark (Wirt County). The river is said to have been named for Jesse Hughes, a pioneer scout, but was at one time known as Junius Creek.
Om·ni·bus (ŏm'nĭ-bŭs', -bəs) n. An anthology of articles on a related subject or an anthology of the works of a single author.

Hello, and welcome to the Hughes River Omnibus. This site is dedicated to a very small, very special area in north central West Virginia and is intended to serve as a clearinghouse for historical and genealogical information on communities and families in southwestern Ritchie and northern Wirt counties. In Ritchie County, this includes the communities of Cisco, Rusk, Petroleum, Mellin, and Gillespie Run; while in Wirt County, it includes such locales as Freeport and Flint Run. Among the families who have strong ties to the area are Jacksons, Pribbles, Marshalls, Cains, Bostons, Sharpnacks, Borders, Fouttys, Putnams, and many others.

If you have material (articles, documents, reminiscences, photos, etc.) relating to this area, that you would like to share, please feel free to contact me.

Thanks for visiting, and stop back any time.
