Professional Development
"Leaders are more powerful role models when they learn than when they teach."
Rosabeth Moss Kantor
In February 2008, I was selected as a Teacher of Promise. At the statewide conference in Harrisonburg, Virginia, I was assigned a mentor who taught me about classroom management and the beauty of teaching. I had the opportunity to meet accomplished teachers, listen to distinguished speakers, and attend workshops regarding co-teaching and technology. This professional development opportunity also allowed me to share my teaching experiences with other pre-service teachers and, possibly, future colleagues.

In October 2007, I attended the Virginia Association of Teachers of English Conference in Dulles, Virginia. During this conference I was able to learn about integrating comic books and technology into the classroom. I was also able to meet a local writer and hear him read excerpts from his new adolescent literature novel. This professional opportunity helped me learn innovative and unique ways to engage learners.

In July 2005, I represented Virginia Tech at the National Mortar Board Senior Honor Society Conference in Columbus, Ohio. As the Virginia Tech chapter secretary, I strengthened my leadership skills during this conference with students from all over the nation. This experience helped me gain knowledge about philanthropic organizations and big volunteer opportunities.
