I have had a few limited contacts with parents this year (mainly in reference to behavior issues), and I think there is still room for improvement on my end.
I have called several parents in regards to detentions I assign. I tell the parent what the student did and why I felt it was worthy of detention. I think this has gone well because out of six parents, only one has felt that he needed to discuss the situation with me further. I told the parent when I would be available during planning and also what times I was at the school before and after the day and he made plans to meet with me during my planning. I never did meet with him though because I went to the office the day he was supposed to meet me and was told that he had just called saying he could not meet with me. Every other parent I have called about a discipline issue has agreed with my rationale and I have noticed improved behavior from their children. I also give out progress reports to parents who request them and have a parent who wants weekly reports on her son, so I keep my electronic gradebook up to date for his class so that I can get those grades every week. I think my communication with parents could definitely be improved if I would contact them more often, but I do not often find myself in a situation where I feel the parent needs to be contacted. If a student is misbehaving in class, I try to handle that myself before having to give detention or call home. If a student is doing poorly, I make sure he or she knows so that grades can be improved. I also deeply regret being unable to attend the one parent-teacher night our school had this semester. I wish it was on a night other than Monday or they had more than one in the whole semester. |
