Virginia AgrAbility Project

Serving the Needs of Virginia's Farm and Ranch Families Affected by Disabilities. Virginia AgrAbility helps individuals with disabilities overcome barriers to continue in their chosen profession in agriculture. The program collaborates with community professionals to: 1) Modify farm and ranch operations, 2) Adapt equipment, 3) Increase farmstead accessibility, 4) Provide financial counseling, 5) Identify funding sources, and 5) Coordinate community Service

This program, which is new to Virginia, will coordinate and provide direct services by qualified professional and support personnel to ensure the identification of individual needs to persons with disabilities. The recipient must reside in Virginia and their family's primary income must be from the agriculture industry or they intend to make the agriculture industry their vocation. Their source of personal income is farming, ranching or other related agricultural enterprise. Virginia AgrAbility, with the help of their partners, will deliver services such as public education, rehabilitative therapies, assistive technology, in-home health care, peer counseling, independent life skills training, equipment modification and accidental disability prevention.

Virginia AgrAbility will direct its service delivery through facilitation of the Virginia Rural Rehabilitation Partnership (Partnership). The Partnership is a collaborative program through the cooperation of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VA Tech), Cooperative Extension, National Easter Seals (NES), Easter Seals Virginia (ESV), Virginia Assistive Technology System (VATS), Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center (WWRC), Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services (DRS), Virginia Farm Bureau (VFB) and other local resources. Local resources essential to the overall success of this program include cooperation from existing community, social, education, rescue, and health organizations. Additional cooperation through local Centers for Independent Living (CIL's) will provide resources for training, community awareness, information, referral and follow-up, and peer counseling in most geographical areas of Virginia. Each of these organizations will offer their talents and resources in a cooperative effort to meet the unique needs of farm and ranch clientele throughout Virginia. (See Newsletters)

Nozzle Technologies to Enhance Effectiveness

This is focused on the review of current agricultural spray nozzles and what new designs have to offer to reduce the drift potential. Several comparisons are made with nozzles with a spray table using computer video presentation. The educational goals are to select nozzle that improve pesticide performance while reducing the potential of small drops that tend to drift.

The presentation can also demonstrate the "Ounce" Calibration method to properly fine tune sprayer operation. The method has an extension fact sheet found under the publications list.

A spray table demonstration and spray cube is also available for hands-on exercises and small audiences.
