Lesson 4: Dinner Time!

Purpose/Objectives:

-  TSW investigate how plants make their own food.

Materials and Resources:

  • Elodea plant

  • test tube

  • beaker

  • water

Procedures:

Engage: 15 minutes

The students learned the process of photosynthesis so this lesson is mainly a review of the process with the addition of a few more concepts.  The teacher will pose a scenario for the students that they have to stand at one spot and cook their own food for their entire lives.  What would they eat and what is the process of making it?  At the end of five to ten minutes the teacher would ask for some responses.  Then the teacher would lead the students into a discussion of how this is what all plants go through and they have a process of making their food as well.

Explore: 20 minutes to 25 minutes

The teacher will put up a diagram of a plant leaf and lead the class through a review of the process and clear up any misconceptions that the students may have.  The teacher will also discuss what the products of photosynthesis are used for.

Explain: 15 minutes

The teacher will prepare a demonstration that will show some of the products of photosynthesis.  The Elodea plant is inserted into a test tube, which is then filled with water.  The beaker is filled about half way with water and the test tube with the Elodea and water is inverted and stood up in the beaker.  The test tube will capture any gases that the Elodea plant releases. (i.e. oxygen from photosynthesis)  The teacher will tell the students that this is an experiment that he/she has setup.  Then the teacher will ask the student to tell him/her what he/she is testing for.  The teacher should guide the students thinking through strategic questioning.  Along the way, the teacher should probe the students thinking for explanations of what is going on in photosynthesis and correct any misconceptions.

Elaborate/Evaluation 1:

The teacher will prepare a word search on the board with words used during the lesson about the process of photosynthesis.  Then the students will be given a chance to find as many words as they can.  Once everyone has finished, the teacher asks for words that were found.  As students identify words, the teacher circles the word and then asks the student to explain the importance of this word to photosynthesis.

Evaluate 2:  5 minutes to 10 minutes

The students will be asked to write a letter to their parents that tells the process of how a plant makes its own food.

Student Handouts/Activity Sheets:

  • none

Relevant Safety Issues:

  • none
