Rule 12 - Use of Computers and the Internet


Computers, networks and access to the Internet are valuable resources provided to enrich and support the instructional program. To protect these resources, students shall NOT

  1. Use computers or the Internet in any way that would cause disruption to others.
  2. Use these resources for any purpose not directly related to school activities.
  3. Attempt to bypass any security features on computers, networks or the Internet.
  4. Violate U.S. copyright laws by making or using unauthorized copies of any protested material.
  5. Plagiarize information obtained via the school network.

Additional Administrative Regulations apply to ensure the instructional integrity, maintenance and security of mobile computers issued to students for use both in and out of school.  Students and their parents must assume responsibility for appropriate use of the computer at all times and take precautions to protect the computer from loss or damage.

Students and parents shall read the complete Code of Conduct for Use of the School Network and the Internet which is included in this policy. The students and his or her parent/guardian must sign the Internet Use Agreement before being permitted independent access to the Internet.

Actions Taken - one or more of the following may apply:

Conference with Student/Parent(s)
Referral to Counseling/Student Assistance Program
Loss of Computer and/or Internet privileges
Before/After School Detention
Referral to School Resource Officer/Law Enforcement
Referral to Court System
Out-of-school suspension
Expulsion


 

Internet Use Agreement

I have read the Internet Policy/Acceptable Use Policy and I understand and will abide by the terms of the policy and this agreement. I further understand that any violation of the policy or agreement by me may result in my access privileges being revoked, in school disciplinary action being taken and, in extreme cases, in appropriate legal action.

PARENT/GUARDIAN (To be executed for all students under age 18):

As the parent/guardian of , I have read the Internet Access Policy/AUP and discussed it with my child. I understand that the opportunity for access to the Internet by my child is intended for educational purposes. I recognize that Roanoke County Schools has taken reasonable precautions to limit or control access to objectionable material. Ultimately, I understand that it is the responsibility of my child to restrict his/her use to the classroom projects/activities assigned by the teacher. I also do not expect the school system to be responsible for supervisions of my child's use of the Internet in any setting other than the school. Therefore, I will not hold Schools responsible for materials acquired on the Internet. I hereby give permission to the school to allow Internet access to my child and certify that any information provided on this form is correct.

E-mail is a powerful tool for communication.  I give permission for teachers and other school personnel to use e-mail to communicate with my child.
