COLOMBIA'S NEW EXPORT OF CHOICE... The most recent drug of export preference is Heroin due to the fact that the profit to the drug lords is much greater for heroin then cocaine (as much as two times the amount). Heroin was primarily processed in southeast Asia, but beginning in the late 80's South American countries like Bolivia, Peru, and Colombia began growing the poppy plant from which opium is extracted to make Heroin. COCAINE'S DEMISE HEROIN ON THE RISE... As the cocaine consumption in the US has declined heroin use has been rising. The Colombian drug lords are taking advantage of this by supplying the world with a form of heroin that is very pure, up to 90% pure heroin is trafficked from Colombia to the US. Information on Colombia's heroin exportation is sketchy because it is such a new phenomenon, and also because most of the literature focuses on the trafficking of cocaine. The US is aware of the heroin supply to the US however, have declined to pursue this because of their concentrated efforts to exterminate the cocaine industry. This has given the Cali cartel an opportunity for their heroin exportation to flourish by using the networks already in place from their cocaine distribution. After the demise of the Cali cartel in the mid 90's, many different smaller drug kingpins are now trafficking heroin to the rest of the world. The vast number of drug trafficker presently makes it harder for law enforcement to crack down on the drug syndicates.
