Patrick is an associate professor in the Accounting and Information Systems Dept. and the Computer Science Dept. (by courtesy) at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. 

His research interests include data mining, text mining (text summarization, classification, filtering, and categorization), knowledge management, the application of machine learning techniques to information retrieval, information integration, search engine design and user's interaction with online search engine sevices, collaborative information retrieval and filtering using Bayesian decision theory. Recently, he has been working on several new areas related to social informatics, website success, online communities, quality assessment of information systems, and financial fraud detection using text mining techniques.
