Tank Equipment Links Contact
One of my main concerns in the beginning was to have a tank that did not out scale the small home office. Because of this I decided to forego a sump (and thus a huge piece of furniture) and try to keep my equipment simple and affordable. I found pros and cons to this design. Pros: the tank area appears lighter and less heavy than similar tanks that are incorporated in huge pieces of furniture. Cons: all equipment is hang-on-the-back design, effiecent for this size tank but maybe not the most sophisticated. Also, cable management is an issue and the underside of the tank looks like an explosion of a roll of packaging tape. I am very pleased with the system although I can't wait for a larger tank but that's going to require me to compromise on my minimalist approach. In any event, the growth and colors of my corals and tank inhabitants does indeed demonstrate that my system does works.
Filtration
75lbs Fiji Rock
50lbs (about 1"-4" sandbed)
CPR Bakpak Skimmer
CPR Refugium (smallest model, lit when tank lights are off)
WavemasterPro controlling 3 MaxiJet900's and 1 MJ600
Also, an old Whisper4 for circulation and container for rock rubble.
Lighting
2-175w 20k XMs running on a PFO Ballast
2-95w Actinic VHOs
The actinics come on at noon - the left 175w on at 1pm - the right 175w at 2pm - left 175w off at 11pm - right 175w off at 12am - actinics off at 1am. The XMs have been running now for two months and the corals look better than ever. The 10k's that I began with were awesome...it was simply just time for a change! This hobby is definately habit forming.
Chemistry and Additives
Levels: generally, 7.9-8.3ph, 425ca, 9.0dkh (stable for the last six months)
5g water change every 3 weeks.
Topoff: Kalk is dosed nightly using a Vario dosing pump. I mix a three weeks supply - 25g RO/DI + 14 tablespoons kalk + 250ml vinegar (to help tone down the high ph). Ph is measured with a Pinpoint.
5ml of Iodine added every Saturday.
Problems
The electric cord issues in the pic above to the right!!! Would love to have ONE powerstrip with individual socket timers.
