Letter to Parents
Dear Parents:
My name is Mary Wilkerson, and I would like to welcome your child to my
classroom! This year, we will be covering several mathematical
topics in accordance with the Virginia Standards of Learning.
Many of these concepts can be difficult, but I hope to make this year a
fun one for your student.
Instead of the traditional method of lecture-based teaching, I am
hoping to take a more hands-on approach this year. I have several
activities planned that incorporate technology into the learning of
mathematics. Several of my lessons involve graphing calculators,
web applets, Geometer’s Sketchpad, and/or the TI Navigator
System. I would like to give you an idea of what participating in
some of these lessons may be like, so a sampling of them are linked to
from my home page. I invite you to have a look around and explore
my website to get a feel for how my classroom will be structured this
year.
To me, teaching is more than just facilitating the transfer of
arbitrary information—it is the instilling of knowledge and
skills that can be used in the real world, and the fueling of future
passions and drives. I would like to make this year as positive
an educational experience for your child as I can, and am always open
to discussing issues concerning your student. If you have any
questions or concerns and would like to contact me, please feel free to
e-mail me at wilkerme@vt.edu.
Sincerely,
Mary Wilkerson
