Our lab's breakthroughs in cellulosic ethanol, hydrogen and biomass
have been the subjects of a number of
news media around the world. The key achivements are:
(1) validated the biological feasibility of consolidated bioprocessing (CBP), which will be the ultimate way to produce lowest cost cellulosic ethanol;
(2) invented the cellulose-solvent and organic-solvent based lignocellulose fractionation, which can produce at least 20% more sugar than (dilute acid) steam explosion technology and also isolate acetic acid and lignin before the hydrolysis and fermentation; and
(3) invented the enzymatic hydrogen production technology, which would solve several problems of the hydrogen economy -- hydrogen production, storage (14.8 mass H2%), distribution, and safety.
